DevDocs Pro: ask your docs

An optional subscription we are building on top of the free app: AI answers that cite the pages they come from, explanations of any code you select, search by meaning, flashcards, tabs and split view. Everything that is free today stays free.

Want to know when Pro launches? Install the free app: Pro will appear inside it. We do not collect email addresses.

Ask the docs

Ask a question in plain words, for example "make my script abort as soon as anything goes wrong". DevDocs finds the relevant passages in the docsets on your phone and an AI model writes a short answer from them. Every claim carries a numbered link to the page and section it came from, and tapping it opens that section in the reader.

If nothing in your docs supports an answer, it says so instead of guessing.

Explain this

Select a paragraph or a block of code in the reader and choose Explain. A short, plain explanation slides up under the page, with links back to the sections it used.

Smart search: by meaning

Next to the normal search by name, search by meaning finds passages that match what you describe, even when you do not know the name. Describe it as "make my script abort as soon as anything goes wrong" and the results include 4.3.1 The Set Builtin from the Bash manual, where set -e lives. Results show the docset, the section path and a two-line excerpt.

The passage index is built on your phone. Offline, it falls back to text matches.

Learn mode

Turn a page or your bookmarks into flashcards or a short quiz, edit or delete cards before saving, then review them with spaced repetition. Reviews work offline.

Tabs and split view

Long-press a link to open it in a new tab, switch between up to ten tabs, and on tablets or in landscape read two pages side by side.

Look up anywhere, auto-updates and a widget

Look up anywhere: select a word in any app and choose DevDocs from the text menu to search your docs for it. Background auto-updates keep installed docsets current while the phone charges. A home-screen widget opens search in one tap. (Updating docsets from the Store stays free, as today.)

Honest notes about the AI

  • Answers can be wrong. They are generated by an AI model and labelled as AI-generated. Each one links to its sources so you can check it against the real documentation.
  • Grounded in your docs. Answers are written from passages of the docsets you downloaded, picked on your phone. If those passages do not cover the question, you are told so.
  • What leaves your phone: your question (and up to four earlier turns), and a few short passages of public documentation text. Not your bookmarks, search history, installed docsets, files or account. AI requests go through our own server; the AI provider's key is never in the app.
  • Needs a connection. AI features need internet; your docs keep working offline.
  • Fair use. The plan is 500 AI credits a month (Ask and Explain use 1, a flashcard deck or quiz uses 2). Search by meaning, reviews, tabs, the widget, look-up and updates use no credits.

Questions about DevDocs Pro

When will DevDocs Pro be available?

There is no date yet. The features are built and being tested, but the subscription and the server that answers AI questions are not live. Install the free app; Pro will appear inside it when it launches.

Will anything that is free today move into Pro?

No. Everything in the current app stays free and unlimited. Pro only adds new features.

Are the AI answers always right?

No. Answers are generated by an AI model from passages of your downloaded docs, and every claim links to the page it came from so you can check it. They can still be wrong or incomplete; the app labels them as AI-generated.

What is sent to the server when I ask a question?

Your question, up to four earlier turns of that conversation, and a few short passages of public documentation text picked on your phone. Your bookmarks, search history, list of installed docsets, files and Google account are not sent.

Do the AI features work offline?

No. Ask, Explain and Learn need a connection. Your docs, search and reader keep working offline as before.
