DevDocs FAQ
Everything about keeping developer documentation offline on Android with DevDocs.
What is DevDocs?
DevDocs is a free Android app for reading developer documentation offline. You download documentation sets (docsets) from its Store, and it indexes them on your phone so you can search and read them without a connection.
Is DevDocs free? Are there ads?
It is free and has no ads. There is no limit on how many docsets you install, only your device's storage. You can leave an optional tip in the app; it unlocks nothing.
Does DevDocs work completely offline?
After a docset is downloaded, yes: the library, search, reader and bookmarks all work in airplane mode. You need a connection to download docsets and to check for updates.
How many docsets are there, and which ones?
The Store lists 806 docsets: 181 from the official docset feeds, 624 community-contributed and Flutter, published by its own project. They cover languages (Python, Java, Kotlin, JavaScript, Go, Rust, C, C++, Swift, PHP, Ruby…), frameworks (React, Angular, Django, Laravel, Spring…), databases, DevOps tools and more.
Where do the docsets come from?
From the public docset feeds and the community-contributed docset catalogue, which package each project's own documentation in an open format. DevDocs downloads them from there; the documentation belongs to its authors.
How big are the downloads?
From under 1 MB (Bash, Lua) to about 299 MB (Android). For example Django is about 10 MB, React about 19 MB and Python about 29 MB to download. Docsets take more space once unpacked; the library shows the space each one uses.
Can I download only over Wi-Fi?
Yes. Turn on "Download over Wi-Fi only" in Settings. Downloads also run in the background and resume if the connection drops.
How do docset updates work?
When a feed publishes a newer version of a docset you have installed, the Store shows an update. Your current copy keeps working until the new one is ready.
Can I delete a docset?
Yes. Delete it from your library and its files are removed from the device.
What are online references?
A few references are not published as docsets (C#, the .NET API and JavaFX). DevDocs lists them as online references that open the official docs; those need a connection.
Does DevDocs collect my data?
There is no account. Your searches, history and bookmarks stay on your device. The app sends anonymous usage statistics and crash reports so bugs can be fixed. See the privacy policy.
Does it work on tablets?
Yes. It supports landscape and large screens with a navigation rail, dark mode and Material You colours on Android 12 and newer. It needs Android 7.0 or newer.
What is DevDocs Pro?
A planned optional subscription with AI features (ask your docs with cited answers, Explain this, search by meaning, flashcards) plus tabs, split view, auto-updates and a widget. It is not on sale yet. Read about DevDocs Pro.
A docset I need is missing. What can I do?
Search the Store first: there are 806 docsets and many have alternative names. If it is not there, email abdulhady.aariyan@gmail.com with the project name.
